Artist Spotlight: Lost in the Trees

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Lost in the Trees is a band that almost seems to blur genre titles. Pitchfork prefers "orchestral indie-folk," while NPR settles for just plain old classification of "folk."

Either way, this Chapel Hill band is back with a vengeance with their newly released album, Past Life. The album comes complete with their first single, "Rites," which Rolling Stone heralds as "fragile and beautiful."

We couldn't agree more. In addition to the hauntingly beautiful song is the music video, which lead singer, Ari Picker describes in an interview with Rolling Stone as "...the journey of shedding one life and moving to the next. It ties into the theme of the record; two souls passing through one life-realm, plane, universe--chasing and finding one another and splitting apart." We couldn't begin to describe the majesty of the video better, so we didn't even try.

My discovery of Lost in the Trees was a very happy accident. My friend Jordan found himself with an extra ticket to their Duke Performances show and dragged me along. I found myself dead center in the second row of the intimate Reynolds Industries Theater facing Lost in the Trees as they performed, backed by a full chamber orchestra. It was one the most powerful musical experiences of my life. Lost in the Trees posted this video of one of their songs, "Garden", which they performed that night. I've showed this to so many of my friends and family that they now want nothing to do with me, but I'm not sorry about it.

Past Life seems to usher in a new era for the band. While their previous record A Church That Fits Our Needs dealt largely with Picker's mother's suicide in 2008, Past Life opens the door for a more dynamic feel to the tracks. I currently have Past Life on a steady repeat as I eagerly await their show at Cat's Cradle on Friday. It will be a much more bare-bones version of Lost in the Trees than I'm used to, but I have no doubt that I will be just as blown away as I was the first time.
