This guy, in more ways than one, is a breath of fresh air and unique to anything I've heard. For starters, he is a very strange guy, but somehow manages to charm you with his sleazy, goofball attitude. After the release of his first solo album, Weird Canada referred to him as "a self-aware rhythmic slime-rocker." He defines his unique genre as "jizz jazz" and according to an interview featured on Exclaim.ca, DeMarco plans on "pumping the world's ass full of" this music. If that doesn't give you a taste for his sense of humor, just watch one of his music videos.
What makes his music so enticing, is that his eccentric personality comes through in every song. DeMarco's twisted style on the guitar combined with his raw lyrics make his minimalistic rock n' roll incredibly intriguing. Pitchfork rated his second solo album, "2", as one of the top 50 albums of 2012.
"2" in my opinion, is his best yet and a step ahead of his first album "Rock and Roll Nightclub." His most recent album distinguishes him from Makeout Videotape through his unsettling and very honest songwriting. His songs contain very deep, relatable messages, but it may not be distinguishable right away because he manages to keep a light tone through his unconventional guitar playing. Pitchfork describes this perfectly in the album review of "2" when they write, "he has a knack for building songs where the realness of his subject matter lies just below the surface."
This guy is definitely worth a listen - I can guarantee that he'll be music to your ears. And if you like him as much as I do, you're in luck!!! Because he's making his way to the Triangle on April 10th and performing at a venue that perfectly suits his style - The Duke Coffeehouse. Don't miss it!
