3 Triangle Bands to Listen to Right Now

Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba
Calling all Rusted Root fans! This Carrboro-based band provides up-tempo jams based on the Manding tradition of Senegal, leading to an absolutely infectious sound. We're all personally big fans of songs that just make you feel good and Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba execute that flawlessly. The band is comprised of Diali Cissokho, an illustrious kora player from Senegal, alongside four masterful musicians who hail from the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The culture clash that should exist instead melds itself into flavorful music that reflects the history of West Africa with pertinent touches of regional flavor. Their next show is their album release party at Cat's Cradle on March 14th and we cannot wait to see the show they're sure to put on.

Hiss Golden Messenger
An earthy folk duo, whose collaboration spans 20 years and two other bands, has been making the Triangle rounds since 2007. Their 2011 LP, Poor Moon, lead to critical acclaim by Uncut and Pitchfork. Hiss Golden Messenger has been releasing a steady stream of quality work dropping an astonishing seven albums since 2009. The duo will be making a stop at Cat's Cradle on Friday before heading overseas for the summer.

Mount Moriah
Mount Moriah comes to us from the since-shuttered Schoolkid Records in Chapel Hill, where lead singer Heather McEntire helped guitarist, Jenks Miller, land a job. Since then, the duo has expanded to a trio and has been releasing stunning albums that stick close to North Carolina's country roots. The closest Mount Moriah will come to the Triangle is Winston-Salem's Phuzz Phest on April 4th. But if you were to ask me, I'd say it's worth the drive.
