3 Music Genres That Didn't Exist 3 Years Ago

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

It seems as though every decade is defined by specific genres, and it's easy to recall the most influential ones. Rock n' roll was huge in the sixties while disco shaped the seventies. But with the evolution of technology, we're starting to see a great deal of experimental music, and unique fusions of different genres. And it seems as though the ability to share music has greatly accelerated the development of music. Here are some new genres that are a product of the 2010s...

1. PBR&B (aka Hipster R&B). The name of this genre is a little unfortunate in my opinion, with the "PB" referencing the beloved hipster beer, PBR. It refers to a progressive, indie type of R&B music similar to Frank Ocean. Some artists include Jhené Aiko, The Weeknd, and Miguel. Take a listen...

2.  Chillwave (aka Glo-fi). People often refer to this music "summertime music" because of its feel-good ambiance. It is widely known for being produced by an artist on their laptop, with heavy use of synthesizers and filtered vocals. The most notable artist from this movement, and my personal favorite is Toro y Moi. Some others include Washed Out and Neon Indian.

3. Future Garage (aka Post Dubstep). This is a very intriguing product of the dub-step movement and incorporates an innovative style electronic music. Deriving from many pre-dubstep UK artists, it contains many of the same elements of dub-step, but they are used in a much softer manner. James Blake, who will be at Bonnaroo this year, is a notable artist from this genre. Others include Flying Lotus, Disclosure and Sepalcure.
