Artist Spotlight: St. Vincent

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

Annie Clark, better known by her stage name, St. Vincent, may not be from the Triangle, but I find that her fearless and unique sound represents the area's multi-layered personality to a T.

Clark started her musical career with the large-scale choral rock group, The Polyphonic Spree, who gained fame after their single, "Light and Day" was featured in the soundtrack for the achingly beautiful, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. She left the band in 2006 to join the touring band for Sufjan Stevens, another personal favorite of mine, bringing along a three-track EP to sell at his shows, adopting the name St. Vincent.

Clark's sophomore album, Actor won her critical acclaim that combined with her powerful live performances helped the album climb to #90 on the charts. In 2012, she collaborated with the notorious David Byrne of Talking Heads fame to release Love This Giant. While some musical media outlets decried the high-profile collaboration as somewhat of a letdown, they were quick to highlight Clark's personal brilliance on the album. Pitchfork credited her as being "responsible for Giant's best moments.'

Her latest effort, a self-titled album, has dispelled the last of the naysayers and has asserted Clark as a musical force to be reckoned with. Paste Magazine heralds her latest musical offering as a piece that "entertains and provokes at every turn and is disarmingly self-assured." The Washington Post bolsters this review by described St. Vincent as "endlessly fascinating." Though I'm far from an impartial observer, as I am huge fanatic of St. Vincent's eccentricities, I can't help but agree. I dove head first into the album as soon as it released last month and I haven't looked back.

St. Vincent will be playing a sold-out show at Cat's Cradle tonight. And while I am endlessly bummed that I won't be in attendance, I will keep myself content by keeping her albums on repeat.
