Tobacco Road Radio Stations

Thursday, February 27, 2014

It is easy for us to forget (especially during basketball season) that the universities around here are known for more than just their athletic programs. NCSU, UNC and Duke are also home to some award winning student run radio stations.

WXYC at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: WXYC prides itself in being the first radio station in the world to stream its on-air signal over the Internet.

WKNC at North Carolina State University: According to their website, WKNC focuses on five main styles of music; Electronica: "Afterhours," Hip-hop: "Underground,"Indie rock: "Daytime," Metal: "Chainsaw" and North Carolina- Based Music: "Local".

WXDU at Duke University:  WXDU describes itself on its website as a station that aims to provide the listener with an alternative viewpoint untainted by commercial interests.

So when your on your way to work tomorrow morning, scan through these stations and I'm sure you will find something funky to jam to. I also suggest checking out the blogs and resources on these sites to find out about new shows or artists coming to the area. These stations are well respected in the Triangle music community and they are definitely worth a listen.
